Walk a Block for Sight - Monday, October 29, 2007
VoicePrint and the Canadian Association of Optometrists promote October as Eye Health Month, a national public awareness campaign which highlights the importance of eye health and regular eye examinations. In partnership with the CNIB and the Canadian Council of the Blind, VoicePrint hosted Walk a Block for Sight where myself, and others, learned the proper use of a white cane. We then were blindfolded, and, with the help of a Sighted Guide, we navigated our way around the block. It took me one hour and 15 minutes to do so. It was an experience I will never forget. For a brief while, I had a touch of insight into how challenging life can be for those with vision problems.

VoicePrint Canada Press Release (July 2006):
VoicePrint Spotlight Listen

Krista Cook, one of our Halifax volunteers who has been on board since the launch of our Halifax LBC, has been named the CTV Maritime Volunteer of the Week. Yeah for Krista!! The presentation was aired at 5:00 p.m. on July 14, 2006, on CTV Maritime. "You have a unique voice" is something Nova Scotia-native Krista Cook has heard for years. But it wasn't until about a year ago that the 40-something mother of two decided to try her hand at broadcasting. Fortunately for VoicePrint, she decided to become a volunteer reader. "I wanted to see if I had the voice people said I had and the ability to use it," she says of her decision to audition at the Halifax office. "VoicePrint is a great service and I liked the atmosphere the first time I walked through the door. It's a lot of fun." Since then, the busy mother and staffer at Nova Scotia Hearing and Speech has discovered that a growing number of others want to hire her voice. She has voiced radio commercials, television ads and appears each Monday afternoon on Seaside FM's "Rolling Home" show. Despite her daunting schedule, Krista still finds time to brighten Fridays with her drive and energy on VoicePrints's Atlantic Regional Report (12:30 p.m. Eastern Time). Krista, also a regular on VoicePrint's Halifax-produced specials, is active away from the microphone as well, lending her considerable organizational and PR skills to VoicePrint's outreach efforts. "I love the service and because I've been able to get out and meet people who listen to the Atlantic Regional Report. I've realized how diverse the audience is and just how many people listen. In fact, the first time someone recognized my voice from VoicePrint I was in a coffee shop and the lady behind the counter asked if I was Krista Cook. Turns out her father is loosing his sight, listens to VoicePrint all the time and he got her listening. It's amazing how we touch people's lives, and all it takes is a couple of hours of fun a week. It's great for my soul, too."
